Crab Rangoon Grilled Cheese

If you love crab Rangoon like I do, you have to try this crab Rangoon grilled cheese. I love this recipe, because you can make it in any cream cheese to crab ratio you want. I prefer mine more heavy on the imitation crab, but you can make it as ooey and gooey as you want by adding more cream cheese. This recipe is such a great way to enjoy crab Rangoon without all the fuss of pinching those wontons wrappers.

Why you’ll love these crab Rangoon sandwich

  • This recipe is everything you love in crab Rangoon without the fuss of folding the wonton wrappers. You can toss this recipe together quickly for a delicious lunch.
  • Imitation crab.. need I say more? Imitation crab was something I loved growing up, so this sandwich gives me all the nostalgia of my childhood.
  • This sandwich is so good, you will want to make it again and again. Do not sleep on this recipe!

Here’s what you’ll need to make it

  • Bowl – Just a small bowl, to mix the ingredients evenly.
  • Spatula – I used a semi-stiff silicone spatula, so you can mash the cream cheese to make sure it’s evenly mixed.
  • Frying pan or griddle – I used our griddle because it’s perfect for making grilled sandwiches.

Ingredients & substitutions

  • Imitation crab – I buy the leg version because I think it’s easier to shred. I’ve seen all kinds of ways people shred this. But rather than pulling out another kitchen gadget, I just pull it apart with my hands.
  • Cream cheese – You can use more cream cheese if you would like, but I prefer my sandwich to be more crab heavy than cream cheese heavy.
  • Green onions – I use at least 2 green onions. I love the crunch and flavor of the onions so sometimes I like to add a little more.
  • Soy sauce – I used low sodium soy sauce, because that’s what I prefer overall.
  • Sesame oil – This splash of sesame oil gives this just a hint of nuttiness. This flavor lends itself really nicely to this sandwich.
  • Garlic powder – I used garlic powder out of ease, but you could also use fresh garlic if you want that little extra bite.
  • Hot honey ranch or chili crisp – You can buy or make garlic chili oil, but I think my hot honey ranch recipe is so BOMB with this sandwich. Give it a try!
  • Slices of bread – I use my homemade sourdough, but use whatever your favorite bread is for grilled cheese sandwiches.
  • Butter for cooking – Slather one side of each slice of bread with butter. Crust to crust is a must for that perfect golden brown crunch!

FAQs about crab Rangoon

Why are they called crab Rangoon?

The name “Crab Rangoon” is believed to be a nod to the traditional Burmese dish, “ohn-no khauk swe” or “ohn-no kaukswe,” which is a soup made with noodles and chicken. “Rangoon” was the former name of Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma), where the dish is said to have originated.

How do crab rangoons taste?

Crab meat is lightly sweet and I think cream cheese is a bit sweet as well, but the filling for these Crab Rangoon isn’t overtly sweet. I know some American Chinese restaurants serve it with a sweeter filling, so if you want a little extra, you can add a bit of powdered sugar to your filling when mixing.

What is crab Rangoon also known as?

Also known as Crab Puffs, Crab Pillows, and Cheese Wontons, these are essentially fried wontons stuffed with cream cheese and imitation crab (or sometimes real crab). They are crunchy and creamy, and they are prepared nearly the same at every restaurant.
