If you have never made your own croutons, you are completely missing out! Homemade croutons take any salad to the next level, and they take only minutes to make. It’s also a great way to use up stale bread, and only requires a few ingredients. And the best part is, you can make them in your air fryer.
I chose to use my air fryer for this, but if you don’t have one, you can bake these, or even use a frying pan. Any method you decide to use, still makes a great crouton.
The first step is to cut your bread into cubes. I like a larger crouton, but make sure not to make it too large where they are hard to eat. The more stale the bread, the smaller you can cut them. I prefer my croutons to be about 1/2-1 inch cubes.
Add your cubes to your zip top bag, along with the oil and spices. Shake the bag until the cubes are well coated. Add them to the air fryer, and fry for about 7-8 minutes at 390 degrees. Let them cool before serving them on your favorite salad.
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can also pan fry or bake these croutons. When you pan fry them, it requires a little more care; pretty consistent tossing so one side doesn’t burn. I like the texture of them pan fried, as they are crispy on the outside, and softer in the center. If you choose to bake them, preheat to 400 degrees, and lay them on a sprayed baking sheet. Bake them until they are crispy, maybe around 20 minutes, stirring once.
